As of July 2025, U.S. households had experienced a 9.5% increase in electricity prices so far this year. These increases are being driven by an boom in AI data centers, alongside growing customer demand for electricity as temperatures rise.

## You don’t have to settle for a higher bill

In many states where energy is deregulated, consumers can work with third-party suppliers to secure electricity rates that may beat the default prices set by your utility provider. But there’s a catch! Many of these rates may look good on paper, but come with hidden fees, or become a spiky, expensive variable rate.

States where consumers may secure electricity from a third-party supplier include: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington, D.C.
